Mike Murray has been working at his art for over 25 years. Printmaking, painting, drawing and most recently encaustic painting.  While most of the work is representational and speaks for itself, what follows will help explain a few of the processes.

Encaustic: The painting medium is hot beeswax, oil paint and damar resin. It is heated and applied to a hard surface like wood, metal or glass. It is a technique developed by the Greeks to weatherproof their ships in the 5th century B.C. Jasper Johns made the medium popular again in the 50’s and 60’s with his targets, flags and numbers. Most of Mikes encaustic work incorporates photography with the hot wax medium which technically makes it mixed media.

Monoprints:  A one of a kind print that does not rely on a matrix in the plate. There are many different ways to make a unique print. Most of Mike’s monoprints are of the reductive method. Ink is rolled onto a plate and the image is created by removing ink where the image is meant to be lighter or white. The plate is run through an etching press and offsets the image on wet paper.

Oil Paintings: are traditional in a sense of oil on canvas, linen or wood.

Mike’s work is for sale or commission.  Some of the pieces on this web-site are already sold and some are in his collection. To contact the artist for more information or prices:   mikemurray@visi.com or call the studio
